Sore throat? Chesty cough? Low energy? Runny nose? Having a long winter cold is pretty grim. The feeling of being run down and below par the whole time is depressing… and let’s be honest, I HATE being ill.
I was fed up with constantly reaching for those popular brands and having absolutely no idea what was inside of them. They also no longer matched my view of how amazing plants are at supporting the body and so I began a quest to find out the best natural remedies for my family. Inflammation Inflammation is a key consideration: How to reduce inflammation and create a balanced environment. Inflammation is caused by many things including eating acidic foods (processed foods, dairy, meat etc). These acidic foods create a chain reaction in the body where the body feels like its constantly fighting off infection, and the infection is just the food you’re eating. By removing these inflammation-causing foods, your body can focus on fighting environmental infections instead. WIN! Gut Health You also need to be thinking about how to support your gut and liver since this is where the strength of your immune system stems from. We spend too much of our time trying to avoid germs and bacteria, when in fact we need to be helping the bacteria in our guts and on our skin to strengthen and thrive. Antibacterial hand wash is not a good thing to have in your house, nor is excessive body cleaning. We have a rule in our house: Pits and Bits. Those are the bits that need attention - the rest need the opportunity to find balance and become healthy. It can feel quite confusing about what to focus on, so I’ve created the following to empower you through this winter and create a strong and healthy body and home. Natural ways to support the body through this winter time:
3 - Add in Apples - starve out bacteria, yeast and mould from the gut and restore the health of your liver. It really is true what they say about an apple (or three) a day.
4 - Probiotics: a good quality probiotic which will boost your guts health and immune system. At least one every day… but more if you’re starting from a place of compromised immune. 5 - doTERRA On Guard Oil - on your feet and in your diffuser. It has clove in it which is exceptionally antiviral and full of antioxidants. So much more than blueberries! If you’re looking for a natural antibacterial that is good for the body, then an On Guard spray is amazing. 6 - Oil of Oregano - Made from wild oregano plants, oil of oregano contains two compounds called carvacrol and thymo. These two compounds act as an anti-viral, anti-bacterial, which is great for preventing and treating colds and sore throat as they kill the harmful micro-organisms that cause many illnesses. 7 - Garlic - an excellent anti-bacterial and anti-viral designed to strengthen your immune. 8 - Oranges - A power house of vitamin C… So get juicing those oranges every day! 9 - Add in more alkalising foods and reducing acidic foods such as anything processed. Smoothies are fantastic! Here’s a great recipe. 10 - Get outside. I am not a fan of the cold, or winter, or big coats, or the wind... BUT I know I always feel so much better once I've had a good walk outside - especially in the trees. Most of the suggestions above are things I would recommend you do every day and incorporate into your daily routine over the winter months (and all year round!) Remember that our health is in our hands and once we have the information, we can really empower ourselves and our families to live happy, healthy lives! Happy Winter, my friends Dawn xx
