How To Find Joy When Life Is Hard

Lime is the oil for those of us who have been weighed down by discouragement, grief and life. It’s the oil that uplifts, instils courage and cheer and cleanses the heart from emotional toxins.

When I was a kid, joy was playing outside with my friends, or watching Happy Days on tv. Joy was going on holiday and playing on the beach with my dad. Joy was trampolining, playing netball and scoring goals. 

But Joy changed.

For most of my teens and adult life I have had absolutely no idea what joy was. I couldn’t feel it inside myself so I started to look for it outside of myself… after all isn’t that where society tells us to find it?
For a long time I thought it was connected to owning new clothes, gadgets, houses, jewellery etc.

I put my hands up to totally having a victim consciousness which means that everything bad that happened to me I thought was totally outside of my control. Life has been hard and for a long time I was definitely ‘poor me’ about it.
It’s easy to get that way when you’re bullied, misunderstood, riddled with health issues, your daughter dies, your marriage breaks down etc. 

For many years I thought that joy was similar to smoking, drinking and addictive activities and something that happened to other people, not me.

But…

I’ve realised that joy is something that like a flower you must water it, tend to it and take care of it.

Joy is the courage to change the way you view your story and accept full responsibility for the creation of your life.

Joy is something you find when you listen, connect to and act from your heart. 

It’s also decisions that make your whole body and face light up and then it radiates to those around you too.

So how do you cultivate joy?

1 - Set the intention to stop playing the victim story and know that you can change your thoughts, with time and patience.

2 - Honour your inner truth. Recognise that this is key and it takes precedence over what society tells you you should be doing.

3 - Make choices based on your hearts desires. Your heart is far more intelligent than your head is and is connected to your best decisions.

4 - Be patient during the process as you’ll experience discomfort as you change your thoughts and reality.

5 - Give yourself time. It takes time and practice to shift conditioned responses to new ones. 

6 - Do new activities. When you’re not connected to joy you don’t know what things bring you joy so you have to try out new ones to see.

I’d like to share with you some of things that bring me joy:

  • Embracing my weird.
  • Embracing my spirituality and sharing my heart with you.
  • Helping someone reach their health goals and create positive change.
  • The days when I win at being a parent.
  • The days when I allow myself to make mistakes and say its ok.
  • Make decisions from my heart and not logic / head. 
  • Being free from emotional and mental pain.
  • Being free from physical pain.
  • Eating, living and growing plants / Mother Nature
  • Snuggles with my family
  • Kindness.

What brings you joy?

Take time today to write down the things that bring you joy… and if you don’t know what does bring you joy then start your quest today.

Joy is your healing and the time is now.

So go ahead and stick some lime in your diffuser and connect to your joy.
